Beating at S4:34 is a signal for divorce

Purpose of marriage in the Qur’an is for companionship, procreation and intimacy and not to commit violence against the wife.

S25:54 It is He Who has created man from water: then has He established relationships of lineage and marriage: for thy Lord has power over all things.

S30:21 And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.

S4:19 O you who have believed, it is not lawful for you to inherit women by compulsion. And do not make difficulties for them in order to take back part of what you gave them unless they commit a clear immorality. And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good.

S4:34 Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more strength than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband’s) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them first, (Next), refuse to share their beds, And last beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means of annoyance: For Allah is Most High, great (above you all).

Woman have got similar rights as the men according to the Quran –

S2:228 …..And women shall have rights similar to the rights against them, according to what is equitable; but men have a degree of advantage over them. And Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise.

S4:128 If a wife fears cruelty or desertion on her husband’s part, there is no blame on them if they arrange an amicable settlement between themselves; and such settlement is best….

Thus in the Quran, the woman have the right to do to the same as the man as prescribed in S4:34 to “beat” –

The women have the same right as the husband if the husband is disloyal and of ill-conduct to be admonished, refused sharing their beds and to beat them….

The last option to beat in the above verse  is not to bludgeon one another but to beat as a signal to proceed with divorce. The example of beating which is approved by Allah is stated below –

S38:44 (We said), “And take in your hand a bunch of grass and beat with it and do not break your oath.” Indeed, We found him patient, an excellent servant. Indeed, he was one repeatedly turning back to Allah.

So beating with a bunch of grass by either one of the couple is to signal for divorce as the other avenues have not succeeded.

DURING PROCEEDING FOR DIVORCE –

S4:35 If ye fear a breach between them twain, appoint two arbiters, one from his family, and the other from hers; if they wish for peace, Allah will cause their reconciliation: For Allah hath full knowledge, and is acquainted with all things.
