How do you call the names of your God in your prayers?

It is stated in the Quran that the names of God are special and exclusive and most of it is showing what His attributes are. All His names are blessed and created by Him and He will take into account those who manipulate and deviate to abuse it with that of God’s. God is particular the way His names are being mentioned and to call upon Him.

In the Quran all His names are beautiful names and should reflect His attributes with the special meanings solely due to Him and none others are equal to that of His status as Lord of the heavens and the earth:

S55:78 Blessed be the name of thy Lord, full of Majesty, Bounty and honour.

S7:180 The most beautiful names belong to Allah: so call on him by them; but shun such men as use profanity in his names: for what they do, they will soon be requited.

All of His beautiful names are stated in the Quran and He commanded that only His names which He has authorized should be used to call upon Him and He takes offend those who call Him by the wrong names or by those names which He did not authorized –

S7:71 He said: “Punishment and wrath have already come upon you from your Lord: dispute ye with me over names which ye have devised ye and your fathers, without authority from Allah? Then wait: I am among you, also waiting.”

God is particular how His name is being called as He commanded. As such in all matters concerning His names and especially when we call upon Him by establishing the daily obligatory prayers it is imperative that we call Him by His beautiful names and not by any other than that which He has authorized –

S17:110-111 Say: “Call upon Allah, or call upon Ar Rahman: by whatever name ye call upon Him, for to Him belong the Most Beautiful Names. Neither speaks thy Salat aloud nor speaks it in a low tone, but seek a middle course between.” And say: “Praise be to Allah, who begets no son, and has no partner in His dominion: Nor needs He any to protect Him from humiliation: yea, magnify Him for His greatness and glory!”

There are many names which He Himself have authorized and which He commanded the believers to call upon Him and this is all stated in the Quran. There are other names He is being called upon but if one check by doing a little analysis in the Quran it is not only absence but the names has been perverted and more than not it is the names which has been passed from father to sons through generations without making reference to the Book from God. The names of God in the Quran will normally goes with the prefix by the definite article of the Arabic word “Al” or “The” showing there is none other equal to Him as He is “The Only One” to be worshipped –

S12:40 “If not Him, ye worship nothing but name which ye have named, ye and your fathers for which Allah hath sent down no authority: the command is for none but Allah: He hath commanded that ye worship none but Him: that is the right religion, but most men understand not.

When calling His beautiful names one can find that the name Allah-hu-Akbar is not listed in the Quran. It is suspected that disbelieving Arabs deliberately changed to distort the original name Allah AlKabir meaning Allah is greatest to be Allah-hu- akbar which mean Allah is greater.

S13:9 He knoweth the unseen and that which is open: He is the Greatest (Al Kabir), the Most High.

The Qur’an not only can identify the abused names of God but also the falsified names of God in previous scriptures which are obvious.

These are some examples of the names of God that have been falsified into weird names to call upon –

Exodus 3:13-14 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

Exodus 34:14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

Deuteronomy 32:3-4 Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God. He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

Below is the third of the Ten Commandments, prohibiting the misuse or taking of God’s name in vain. It  emphasizes the importance of reverence for God and His name, which represents His character and reputation.

Deuteronomy 5:11 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Exodus 3:15 And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.

Inspite of having declared that the biblical God’s odd name “I AM THAT I AM” will not change unto all generations, the Christians make new names for their God –

THE FATHER
John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

THE HOLY GHOST
Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

AND JESUS
John 8:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

It is therefore blasphemous to call on God by name He has not authorized and those of His names that have become strange names.

It is then a duty to put His correct names when one calls on Him in prayers otherwise, it would be just following the habit of past ancestors calling on their invented names of God as stated in the Quran as follow –

S12:40 “If not Him, ye worship nothing but name which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority: the command is for none but Allah: He hath commanded that ye worship none but Him: that is the right religion, but most men understand not.
