S2:219 Is wine and gambling good or bad?

Surah 2:219 They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, “In them is great sin and some benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit.”……

S5:90 “O ye who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, dedication of stones, and divination by arrows, are an abomination, of Satan’s handwork: eschew such (abomination), that ye may prosper”

S5:91 Satan’s plan is to excite enmity and hatred between you, with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah, and from prayer: will ye not then abstain?

The assertion that strong drink are only an infamy of Satan’s handiwork. Yet on the other hand in the Qur’an it is a joy to those who drink it in Paradise.

S47:15 Here is a Parable of the Garden which the righteous are promised: in it are rivers of water incorruptible; rivers of milk of which the taste never changes; rivers of wine, a joy to those who drink; and rivers of honey pure and clear. In it there are for them all kinds of fruits; and Grace from their Lord. Can those in such Bliss be compared to such as shall dwell for ever in the Fire, and be given, to drink, boiling water, so that it cuts up their bowels (to pieces)?

S83:25 it says “Their thirst will be slaked with Pure Wine sealed”

Then can it not be said how does Satan’s handiwork get into Paradise?

S76:21 Upon them will be green garments of fine silk and heavy brocade, and they will be adorned with bracelets of silver; and their Lord will give to them to drink of a Wine Pure and Holy.

The wine in Paradise is described as intoxicant-free.

S37:46-47 “Crystal-white, of a taste delicious to those who drink thereof, no bad effect there in it nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom.”

Furthermore, there is no mentioned in the Qur’an that drinking of wine is prohibited or “haram” in this world and thus there is no conflict between drinking in this world and in the hereafter of pure wine.

It is not prohibited or made “haram”  because there is some benefits in it stated above in Surah 2:219 as Allah only cautions those who consume intoxicant not to be a victim to Satan’s deception in S5:91 by turning out making enmity and hatred among themselves.

It is however, permissible as long as intoxicants are taken for health purposes or in gambling by limiting to those of lottery for charity purposes to mention some of it benefits.

However, the more urgent matter in intoxicants is to avoid being lax during enjoying drinking and gambling with friends then during the pleasure make him miss to perform the daily obligatory prayers or being drunk that he knew not what he is saying in his prayers.

S4:43 O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying or in a state of ceremonial impurity except those passing through a place of prayer, until you have washed your whole body. And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands with it
. Indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving.

Although intoxicants are not defined as prohibited or “haram” in the Qur’an one must have a really good reason to give to Allah as an excuse for his habits of taking intoxicants or his gambling which he has to answer on the Day of Judgment.
