Christian missionaries argue that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was not certain about his own salvation according to Islamic sources. They put forth a verse of the Quran and a hadith as proof for this.
S46:9 Say: “I am no bringer of new-fangled doctrine among the messengers, nor do I know what will be done with me or with you. I follow but that which is revealed to me by inspiration; I am but a Warner open and clear.”
Saheeh Bukhari
Volume 5, Book 58, Number 266:
Narrated’ Um al-‘Ala:
An Ansari woman who gave the pledge of allegiance to the Prophet that the Ansar drew lots concerning the dwelling of the Emigrants. ‘Uthman bin Maz’un was decided to dwell with them (i.e. Um al-‘Ala’s family), ‘Uthman fell ill and I nursed him till he died, and we covered him with his clothes. Then the Prophet came to us and I (addressing the dead body) said, “O Abu As-Sa’ib, may Allah’s Mercy be on you! I bear witness that Allah has honored you.” On that the Prophet said, “How do you know that Allah has honored him?” I replied, “I do not know. May my father and my mother be sacrificed for you, O Allah’s Apostle! But who else is worthy of it (if not ‘Uthman)?” He said, “As to him, by Allah, death has overtaken him, and I hope the best for him. BY ALLAH, THOUGH I AM THE APOSTLE OF ALLAH, YET I DO NOT KNOW WHAT ALLAH WILL DO TO ME,” By Allah, I will never assert the piety of anyone after him. That made me sad, and when I slept I saw in a dream a flowing stream for ‘Uthman bin Maz’un. I went to Allah’s Apostle and told him of it. He remarked, “That symbolizes his (good) deeds.”
In S46:9 the Prophet was not uncertain of his future when he was commanded to say
“….nor do I know what will be done with me or with you….” but not to be arrogance.
There is an example of humility in Muhammad in the Qur’an at S46:9 which believers is encouraged to follow.
One of the examples believers were to follow and emulate Prophet Muhammad A.S. is his humility that Allah had taught him to say as in the above verse . Although he is guaranted to be rewarded by Allah yet Allah cautioned him to be humbled in nature when addressing other people.
S68:2-4 You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman. And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
S108:1-3 To thee have We granted the Fount (of Abundance). Therefore to thy Lord turn in Prayer and Sacrifice. For he who hate thee, he will be cut off from Future Hope.
S48:1-2 Verily We have granted you a manifest Victory: That Allah may forgive for you what preceded of your sin and what will follow and complete His favor upon you and guide you to a straight path.
The Prophet Muhammad A.S. was aware of all the verses that is to his favour but he was commanded not to be arrogance but to approach and to say of himself in a humble manner. The Quran teaches not to be arrogant when speaking to others but remains humble.
S31:18-19 And do not treat people with arrogance, nor walk proudly on earth. God does not love the arrogant showoffs. And moderate your stride, and lower your voice. The most repulsive of voices is the donkey’s voice.”
S3:159 So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude in speech and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely upon Him.
S33:21 Ye have indeed in the Messenger of Allah a beautiful pattern of conduct for any one whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day, and who engages much in the Praise of Allah.
