The meaning of making “Salawat” on the Prophet at S33:56

It is common belief the Quran states that Allah (God) sends blessings (Salât) on the Prophet Muhammad, and His angels also ask to send for blessings on him. Muslims are then commanded to do the same, expressing blessings and peace on the Prophet. This is an act of worship and reverence for the Prophet, considered a vital part of Muslim prayers and devotional life.

However, the verse below is not about praying or blessing for the prophet. It is about making salutation on the Prophet and honour the office of the Prophethood. Muhammad is not the only prophet in Islam so all the other prophets also received the same kind of salutation from Allah and His angels. So believers is to honour by giving salutations not only to  Muhammad but all the other prophets who were Allah’s chosen servants –

S33:56 Allah and His angels send salutations (yusallun) upon the Prophet: O ye that believe! Send your salute (sallu) on him, and greet (salimu) him with greeting of peace (taslima).

All prophets were chosen servants of Allah and Muhammad was not the only one getting this honour.

In fact in that verse S33:56, Prophet Muhammad was also commanded to honor and salute all other prophets who were chosen servants of Allah having the office of prophethood.

He was commanded by Allah to salute all the other prophets as follows –

S27:59 Say: Praise be to Allah, and Peace on his servants whom He has chosen for his Message……

The above command is the practice to follow and obey on how he make salutations to Prophet Muhammad and to all the other prophets whom were God’s chosen servants.

And here are some examples how Allah honour by giving salutations and greeting to His servants –

S37:75-79 And Noah had certainly called Us, and We are the best of responders. And We saved him and his family from the great affliction. And We made his descendants those remaining [on the earth] And left for him favorable mention among later generations: “Peace upon Noah among the worlds.”

S37:108-109 And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:
“Peace upon Abraham.”

S37:120 Peace upon Moses and Aaron

Nevertheless, those who are patient will also receive salutations from Allah and His mercy –

S2:156-157 Who say, when afflicted with calamity: “To Allah We belong, and to Him is our return” They are those on whom received salutation (salawaatun) from Allah and Mercy, and they are the ones that receive guidance.

So believers is to honour and salute not only Prophet Muhammad but also to Noah, Abraham, Ismael, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Jesus or any other prophet whom Allah had chosen without making any distinction.

S2:136 Say, “We have believed in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants and what was given to Moses and Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him.”
