Muhammad is not illiterate, but he is unlettered that he had no knowledge of previous scriptures.

Muhammad can read, write, and preach the Quran!

THE MEANING OF UMMI IN THE QURAN

Ummi mean unlearned or unlettered of holy monotheist scriptures in the Quran and not illiterate of not knowing to read and write.

Prophet Muhammad A.S. and the Arab community were not illiterate they know how to read and write but they were not familiar or unlearned of former monotheist scriptures before Muhammad received the revelations.

For those scholars who take ummi to means illiterate of not knowing to read and write, they are making themselves ridiculous as they will make the whole Arab community illiterate of not knowing to read and write!

Allah did not sent a messenger to an Arab community where none could read and write or illiterate but He sent to a community where none were knowledgeable or unlearned about previous holy scriptures because they were pagan.

S62:2 It is He Who has sent among the Unlettered (not illiterate) a messenger from among themselves, to rehearse to them His Signs, to sanctify them, and to instruct them in Scripture and Wisdom, although they had been, before, in manifest error.

S3:20 So if they dispute with thee, say: “I have submitted My whole self to Allah and so have those who follow me.” And say to the People of the Book and to those who are unlearned (not illiterate): “Do ye also submit yourselves?” If they do, they are in right guidance, but if they turn back, thy duty is to convey the Message; and in Allah’s sight are all His servants.

Here is the evidence the “umiyoona” do not mean illiterate but were of those who know how to read and write but who were unlearned of holy scriptures.

S2:78-79 And among them are unlettered ones (not illiterate) who do not know the Scripture except in wishful thinking, but they are only assuming. So woe to those who write the “scripture” with their own hands, then say, “This is from Allah,” in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn.

The Prophet of Islam and his Arab community can read and write just as any other educated, cultured and intelligent community did during his time.

S17:106 And it is a Quran which We have revealed in portions so that you may read it to the people by slow degrees, and We have revealed it, revealing in portions.

S29:45 Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.

S73:1-5 – O thou folded in garments! Stand by night, but not all night. Half of it, or a little less, Or a little more; and recite the Qur’an in slow, measured rhythmic tones.
Soon shall We send down to thee a weighty Message.

S25:5 And they say, “Legends of the former peoples which he has written down, and they are dictated to him morning and afternoon.”

THOSE WHO CLAIMED THE PROPHET IS ILLITERATE WERE IRRESPONSIBLE, THE PROPHET CAN READ AND WRITE BUT HE HAS NO KNOWLEDGE AND HE WAS UNLEARNED OF PREVIOUS SCRIPTURES!
